Notebook with black letters saying Thought Catalog, along with pair of black pens

Quick Thought – It costs how much to say please and thank you to ChatGPT?

According to Sam Altman, including “please” and “thank you” in your prompts costs them “tens of millions of dollars.

I wonder how much it costs to generate all those action figures, and “what does ChatGPT know about me” posts on LinkedIn?

Seriously, though. Doesn’t this seem like an illegitimate business model? Like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, are they all urging us to use AI for everything, even if it means losing money in the process? How does that make sense? Where do they expect this to lead?

Perhaps most importantly, how much energy are we burning in being polite to a chatbot? Is it worth it?
