Is Anthropic’s CEO a Psychopath or a Liar?

Two quotes, similar vibe:

“John Gacy is a madman who has been reaching out, saying ‘Stop me before I kill again,’ Mr. Amirante said.”

From this article, a quote from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei

“We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming. It’s a very strange set of dynamics, where we’re saying: ‘You should be worried about where the technology we’re building is going.'”

This was in the context of his claim that AI will eliminate at least 50% of all jobs. So, the question is, if he believes that AI is going to cause such complete economic devastation to half of the population, why are these same AI companies conspiring with the current Administration to block all regulation of AI tools? (BTW, his estimate is lower than others in the space. Most of them are predicting the end of a large number of industries.)

If that is the case, than what he’s saying between the lines is “Look, this is going to be fucking terrible for most of you, but I’m going to make my billions. Someone should figure out how to help you. Not me, but someone.”

Or, is this a case of hyping up AI to make it sound more powerful than it will ever be? Is this the 2025 version of “my hands are so dangerous I had to register them as deadly weapons” from men who needed to puff up their tough image?

Which is it? Does Dario Amodei believe AI is going to shatter billions of lives and doesn’t care, or is this part of the AI hype cycle?

What do you think?
