How many people are sharing confidential data with shadow AI tools?

Apparently, the percentage is pretty high:

43% of workers say they’ve shared sensitive info with AI – including financial and client data

Well over half (65%) of respondents said they now use AI in their daily life, marking a year-over-year increase of 21%.

An almost equal number (58%) reported that they’ve received no training from their employers regarding the data security and privacy risks that come with using popular AI tools.

There aren’t enough details to determine how many of the 43% in the headline are using AI tools that are safe and fully vetted by their organization. Some of them may be doing it appropriately. On the other hand, the 58% who report having received no training about privacy and security risks makes me very nervous about all the sharing of sensitive data.

Do your users understand the risks and how to use AI safely?

  1. Funnily enough I had to talk to an AI chatbot last night when an ATM ate my card and I couldn’t get any money out. Thankfully it handed over to a human being who took care of the problem in the same chat window but that was one of my online banks, luckily they have staff on the night shift despite the call centres closing at 6pm!
