Worth Reading – Cybersecurity Awareness Month

I love this year’s theme: Don’t Make It Easy for Them.

I remember growing up and hearing adults I knew in law enforcement talk about someone breaking into your house. The general consensus then was that a house alarm or car alarm wouldn’t stop someone skilled and dead set on getting into your house or car. They weren’t a fail-safe method of protection.

But they’d also point out that most criminals weren’t trying to break into your house, just whatever house they could. So if your alarm made it harder than the house next door, guess where they’d go?

I have no idea how much statistical evidence went into this “common” knowledge, but I think about it a lot when I consider online security. Because eventually, hackers will breach your data. Given enough time and the proliferation of tools available, it’s not if, but when you get hacked. You can, however, make it harder for them, and maybe they’ll look somewhere else instead.

So, this October, spend a few minutes learning some of the basics:

  • Use strong passwords and a password manager

  • Turn on multifactor authentication

  • Recognize and report scams

  • Update your software
