Ick

Saw this story over at Just Another Geek’s blog about knowing a few minutes ahead of time that someone’s going to get fired and having to slide into their office and disconnect them from the network while they’re being fired in another office. I’ve had to do that, and it sucks. I work in a small office, 24 employees total, so not only are you dealing with something that hits all of them hard, you have to know about it, and sneak around doing some “out of the ordinary” things without telling anyone about it. You also have to get in and get out quickly. Any delay in getting the disconnect done and you could be sitting at their desk when they get finished being fired and come back to collect their things, and that’s not going to be a comfortable situation!

No, it’s certainly not something I relish having to do again someday. But I suppose it’ll happen, eventually.

One of my co-workers is cleaning out his office this week. He’s leaving at the end of this month, and he’s been here longer than I have, so he’s finding stuff that I’m only vaguely aware of. The biggest surprise out of the group though is an old PowerBook 5300CS. The good news is, it…

Yeah the morning’s been busy, (isn’t work always busy in IT?) but it’s been busy in a more calm, cool way than things have been. It’s been busy in the way that has you holed up by yourself working on stuff in your own office, not in dealing with and explaining things to a bunch…

  • You gotta love it..

Someone, who shall remain nameless but who is related to me, (although not in my immediate family) forwarded me one of those chain letter email thingies. Not a big deal, she’s been known to do this from time to time, but in this case, she didn’t take out any of the previous forwarding information. This…

Speaking of VMWare player, I also decided this weekend to see if there was a virtual machine for the new version of Ubuntu. There is, actually there are a couple of options, Ubuntu, Kbuntu and Xubuntu, all available by torrent. But while I was waiting for the torrent to download, I decided on a better…

Or, Free at last, free at last, everything over there is NLMP. (No longer my problem!) Yes, it’s true. Yesterday, 6 months after leaving the job, I finally turned in my keys to the building and said sayonara to my former employer. I feel liberated, like a giant weight has been lifted. Looking back it’s…

  • Linspire as VM

Way back when, Linspire offered their OS for free for a limited time. I signed up for that, mostly in order to satisfy my curiousity. Eventually I got the ISO downloaded and tried to use it to build a virtual machine using VMWare Workstation. Unfortunately the install crashed. Since the install was kind of a…
