Out of touch

I know, I’ve been quiet on the blog the last few days. I’ve been busy, mostly doing things, and spending time with, my wife. Since she was going to be gone for the long weekend, I really wanted to put the laptop aside for a few days and spend my spare time with her. It’s all part of something I’ve actually been meaning to write about, having a good work-life balance.

The stereotype of IT folks, of course, doesn’t exactly paint a picture of someone who understands the importance of having a good work-life balance, and that’s something we should be working to change, not embrace. Without the proper amount of sleep, good nutrition, and healthy relationships outside of work, we are not at our best at work either. There are plenty of studies that show we simply can’t work 14-15 hours a day, or sleep a couple of hours here and there and still be at our optimal mental awareness. It simple isn’t possible.

Just think of all the “biggest mistake” stories you hear from your peers that start out the same way: “It was 2AM and we’d been working all day”. You just are much more likely to make a huge mistake like that when you haven’t slept, or eaten, or are having serious work-life balance issues. As much as we sometimes simply need to work on certain projects at odd hours, if you really want to perform your best work day in and day out, take care of yourself.

I’m not saying we all have to go out and turn into organic food eating, green tea drinking, health freaks (unless you already are..), but it probably wouldn’t hurt to have a meal that doesn’t involve Mountain Dew and Snickers once in a while, get a good night’s rest, or get out and enjoy the company of other folks instead of your tech gadgets, etc. You know, get some balance.  This long, holiday weekend would be a great time to do it!

  • Pics, maybe, possibly..

So I got the film pics from Chicago back, and since Angela was working late last night, I “borrowed” her PC and scanner to get the chosen ones scanned so I could put together a web-album type thingy using them, along with a few from the digital camera. Unfortunately, our internet connection was down most…

    Another Reason I love Photography

I think I’ve mentioned before the reasons I’m attracted to photography, but as I’ve gotten somewhat better at it, more and more I find myself enjoying something else about it. While I’m certainly enjoying getting better at it, now I’m also really enjoying seeing other people enjoy my photos. Today that really became clear to…

    Wandering

Today was a day for wandering around and trying to get some decent photos. Angela planned out a nice day of driving to Urbana, Ohio to the Robert Rothschild Farm, to pick some fresh raspberries, have a nice lunch, etc. Unfortunately, the picking turned out to be more work than we had bargained for. Seems…

  • New hobby..

OK, so not really a new hobby, just some new toys for a current hobby, photography. My lovely wife has been in touch with her aunt, who has recently purchased a new camera, and she has agreed to sell Angela her old one, which Angela is buying as my birthday present! So, in a few…

    Photos from National Harbor

Still trying to get back into the swing of things, and caught up with all kinds of general “stuff” after being out of town for a family wedding, and then the ILTA09 conference. Expect that life will be back to normal, maybe, around the three day weekend. Then again, life wasn’t exactly normal before all…

Two Step Program to Better Photos

Bill Pevlor has an interesting read over at the Digital Photography School site, where he lays out his two step plan to becoming a better photographer. As a former IT support person, and a current software trainer, I have to say that his plan would actually work for a lot of areas of technology. You…

  1. Thanks for this post. I’m completely fed up with the amount of time that work takes away from me and my family. Working at a law firm these days means keeping system uptime better than most banks; which goes totally un-appreciated. I’ve had several friends tell me that they are totally disillusioned/disgusted with there careers in IT, and I agree with them most days.
