Switching

Spent a good amount of time switching over my Survivor of Child Abuse blog to blogger. I hadn’t really done much with it and so I simply started over. The commenting was something I was concerned about going in.

I use aspcomments over here because it’s a paid hosting service and I have access to scripts and a cgi-bin.With geocities, I don’t have that, so I had to find something else. I found it the other day in the form of YACCS -Yet another collabrative comment system. They host the scripts and stuff, all I do is put the java coding there to call them. Not bad at all. Go visit this guy and take a look at his other site Rate your music . He’ll appreciate the look!

Picked up an Sega Dreamcast RF Adapter Unit at Best Buy today, so that’s been fun, learning how to properly play NCAA football 2K2. They also had Memorex wheel mouse for $10. My wife and I have both been having problems with dirty mice, so I figured I’d grab a couple of those to replace the inevitable bad mouse we’re going to have. *L* They also had On the Waterfront on DVD. I didn’t know it was out on DVD and there was no way I was leaving the store without a copy! Good thing I had some Christmas money to spend.

The funny thing about Best Buy though, and I don’t mean to belittle the cashier, because she was probably just doing her job, but she tried to get me to buy the extended two-year replacemant guarantee on the mouse. “It’s only $4.99 and is highly recommended in case you need to replace the mouse for any reason”. I just looked at her and said “It’s a ten-dollar mouse. If it breaks, I’ll get another one, no big deal.” She dropped it.

Just Doing What’s In Front of You

Let’s face it, we all have things that we haven’t had space for in the last couple of years. If you are holding off on using PTO because you can’t make the big travel adventure happen right now, why not use that time to create that space? Personally, we had a couple of weeks in October scheduled for an anniversary trip overseas that has since been canceled. I haven’t canceled the PTO for one simple reason, I still want to use those 2 weeks to create the space, mentally, to do some of the things I’ve been too busy to do, like figure out where I actually want my career to go instead of just doing the work that’s in front of me, or indulge in some of those hobbies that have fallen by the wayside, or maybe even try and catch up with some friends virtually.

We all need that space, and it keeps getting harder and harder to find it. There’s nothing wrong with doing the work that is in front of us, professionally and personally. Frankly, if you can keep going and getting those things done in this environment, you are to be commended. On the other hand, just doing that prevents us from making changes and doing things differently. It keeps us stuck, and I know far too many people who are stuck right now, waiting for the space to make changes.

Make that space, any way you can. Give yourself the PTO you deserve.

A Thought About Outliers and Burn Out

I recently finished reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and it has been sparking a few thoughts that I want to turn into blog posts. The first one I’ve already written elsewhere, but this one is a perfect fit for this blog, because I’ve often talked about burnout as it relates to helpdesk work, and some of…
