24 Hours of Free Tools

ByMike McBride April 14, 2009July 22, 2014 Reading Time: 1 minute

Over at Daily Cup of Tech, Tim Fehlman has spent today listing one cool free tech tool every hour. He calls the series 24 in 24, and though I’ve only taken a cursory glance at the free tools he’s shared thus far in the series, it appears there are definitely some interesting things to look into further.

You should be able to scroll through using his category listing for 24 in 24, at least for now. Perhaps Tim will provide a link for the full listing once he’s done?

Update: Tim did leave me a comment, below with the link to the Freebies Roundup. Thanks Tim!

Could Facebook Be Creating a Facial Recognition Tool to be Used by the Government
ByMike McBride October 28, 2013 Reading Time: 3 minutes

NPR has a story this morning talking about Facebook’s facial recognition tools and the potential risk to our privacy that comes along with it. One of the things I like about this story is the explanation of modeling, and how without a model, facial scanning doesn’t really work. It’s comparable to the conversations I’ve had…

Stupid MySpace Security
ByMike McBride July 2, 2007July 22, 2015 Reading Time: 2 minutes

So here’s a good one. Angela logged in to her MySpace account to send a message to a friend of hers. When she did, it gave her an error about the spam filter, then she was prompted to change her password because her account had been phished, which it hadn’t. Stay with me on this…

Thankful
ByMike McBride November 24, 2011November 23, 2011 Reading Time: 2 minutes

This being the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US, it’s a good chance to take a step back and remind yourself all that you have to be thankful for. I’m not going to bore you with a list of all the things I’m thankful for, but this year, with all the changes that have gone…

Linked – Has paying the ransom become business as usual?
ByMike McBride June 18, 2018June 21, 2019 Reading Time: 1 minute

This post is full of bad news like this: Radware released its 2018 Executive Application and Network Security Report. For the first time in the survey’s five-year history, a majority of executives (53%) reported paying a hacker’s ransom following a cyber attack. Ouch. Like most hacking/scam/spam tools, they are usually popular because they work. Ransomware…

Another Thing I Learned about Robocopy Today
ByMike McBride October 6, 2008July 19, 2014 Reading Time: 1 minute

Apparently, if you use Robocopy to copy data into a folder that doesn’t already exist in the source directory, Robocopy will create the folder, as I thought it would, but it will be created as a System folder, with Hidden and Read-Only attributes. Now, that’s not a big deal, it’s easy enough to make hidden…

People Don’t Just Want Tools
ByMike McBride November 5, 2014March 18, 2017 Reading Time: 3 minutes

Saw an article the other day that reminded me of something I rediscover with every training class. “I teach my people on day one…’People don’t want drills, they want holes.’” There’s something very profound in that statement. The reality that “most” people don’t buy tools, or technology, just because they want the technology. They buy…
