Linked – A ‘fake news’ crackdown could follow Macron’s election win in France

Some in Silicon Valley breathed a sigh of relief as French voters overwhelmingly backed Emmanuel Macron as their next president over the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen.

Whether that’s short-lived, however, depends on what Macron meant when he pledged to “regulate the internet” this month.

Watch the people who talk about using legal means to outlaw “fake news”. They never quite define what they mean, or who gets to decide if something is fake or real news. Lots of major media stories are biased, and get details wrong through the ignorance of the writer. Are they all “fake”? Should all news stories be approved by a government agency before being published?

That way lies bad, bad things people.
