Laptop Heat

Had an interesting question from a friend today. They are taking a trip to the West soon and wondered if there would be a problem leaving their laptop in the car while they were touring around one of the national parks for 10-12 hours.

My response was that as long as the laptop was in it’s bag, and the bag was out of the sunlight, in a trunk for example, that I didn’t think there’d be that much of an issue. Certainly, the machine will get some heat, but since it won’t be in use in that heat, and surely would cool off by the time you drove to a nearby hotel and got ready to use it, I’m not sure there’d be enough heat to cause any harm.

Really, my experience with processors or batteries overheating really sort of assumes the machine in on and working when it happens. 😉

What about you guys? Ever had a problem with a laptop overheating just from the outside heat? Any other advice you would have given?

Makes sense –   Now, Dropbox has announced that it will also integrate with Google’s G Suite. That means users will be able to create Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files directly within Dropbox. When I was traveling all the time, Dropbox was a huge part of my life. It’s still a huge part of…

    Feedly Revisited

A couple of folks sent me tweets or messages asking me to reconsider Feedly, because they had added a “cloud” feature, where you could use the service in a web browser, exactly as I had described in my post yesterday. So I am definitely going to check that out again and see how it fits…

    Google Reader update

Back before the holidays I mentioned that I was going to give Google Reader another try after I wasn’t all that impressed with the initial offering way back when. After a few weeks, I’ve decided to continue using it over Bloglines, for a couple of reasons. First, one of the things I like to do…

  • Linked – Is AI the new bloatware?

Whether you consider it bloatware or not may depend on your plan to use AI on a mobile device, but one thing is for sure about all hardware and many services that are adding AI features: They’re getting more expensive.

Adding the power to run AI tools locally costs money. If all Pixel phones are going to do all the AI work on photos and all the iPhones are going to process ChatGPT interactions locally, that’s going to require more expensive hardware.

If all Windows PCs will come with Recall, the same thing applies. The chips that can handle these transactions are in high demand and are not cheap.

    Buddypress

I did finally decide on using Buddypress to roll my own social network to replace the Child Abuse Survivors Network that is currently on Ning. I’ve been spending quite a bit of my free time this week installing it, testing it, adding plugins, testing some more, fixing issues, removing plugins that weren’t working, and just…
