Linked – Google deploys free Wi-Fi to Nigeria so it can show ads to more people

I mean, this is what Google does. It provides a number of different products, for free. The price for signing up is giving up some of your personal information so they can make money from targeted ads based on it.

It’s the same thing Facebook does, the same thing the entire ad-tech industry is built on.

Would it be better for these places in Nigeria to have no internet access? That’s an ethical question that goes to the heart of the entire industry. Would you rather not use the services? OK. If you want to use them though, some level of advertising is going to be involved. We’re still figuring out what that level should be though.
