Linked – Most people worry about deepfakes – and overestimate their ability to spot them
This international research should make us nervous about the upcoming US election. Yes, many folks are concerned, but I feel like these US results don’t bode well.
The study found that 72% of respondents worry daily that they may be fooled by a deepfake, with those in Mexico and Singapore feeling most concerned at 89% and 88%, respectively. In comparison, 57% in the UK and 55% in the US reported having the same worry.
What are the other 45% of Americans looking at? I’ve seen fake photos, screenshots, and videos. Most of them are obvious, but that makes me wonder if it will be much more difficult to recognize the high-quality ones that will come.
Maybe those easy-to-spot ones are lulling us into a sense of overconfidence. What will we do when something is done with more effort and better quality? Heck, enough folks are being fooled by the poor ones because they display something they want to believe. None of us should assume we’d always know.
