Now this is Exciting!

The guys who do the Manager Tools Podcast, which I have loved and learned so much from even though I’m not a Manager, are starting up a new podcast on Dec 4, Career Tools.

Like Manager Tools, it will be a weekly FREE podcast addressing your Career: development, search, interviewing, networking, recruiting, promotions, layoffs, etc.

I’m looking forward to learning more about this in the coming days, and eventually hearing it on Dec. 4, or whenever I get caught up on podcasts… 🙂

  • Thinking about Carl Dean and #IWD2025

When we refer to women as “DEI hires,” what we are really saying is that we aren’t secure enough in our own accomplishments to let someone else shine. I imagine Carl would be embarrassed of us. I suppose the idea that we must diminish any woman’s achievements would be utterly unacceptable to the man who spent 60 years married to one of the most famous women in the world without ever feeling the need to grab the spotlight for himself.

We need examples like that. Carl Dean was one.

    RIP

Linked: Remote Work Helped Meta Achieve Diversity Goals Years Ahead of Schedule

Something I’ve been thinking a lot about in the industries I have worked in has been this idea that remote and asynchronous work is something that makes it less likely that the only people we can hire are the ones who are both willing and able to dedicate their entire days to be in the office and also willing to jump in and do more work at any hour of the day and weekends. That eliminates a whole bunch of people from even applying, especially women with kids, neurodiverse and disabled candidates, and underrepresented groups without a large presence in the area where your office happens to be. (When you start a company in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Austin, or some other “hot” area, your candidate pool is limited to the people who live there now or are willing to move immediately.)
