It’s 2017. We all should just assume potential employers, admission reps, dates, friends, in-laws, etc. are using Google to find out more about us.

This is also a good reason to have a blog, or some website with your name on it. It gives Google something to index about you, that you have complete control over. (Unless your name is very common, like mine, in which case the person searching may have to wander through quite a few Mike McBrides…)
At the very least, search for yourself while you are not logged in to Google and see what comes up for someone else. You may be surprised. It may be quite different than what you see as yourself. Google likes to personalize stuff like that you know.
