This raises some interesting questions about wealth distribution among many other things. What does happen in service jobs, to the people left behind without other options?
From reading these stories, it’s clear that there is not always an appreciation for people who don’t leave, just an expectation that they will be taking advantage of more by employers, and treated worse by customers.
This makes me consider a couple of things:
I’ve mentioned before that in some of the worst of my mental health struggles, I had a manager who helped me manage the process and was incredibly supportive of me doing what I needed to do, and I later had a manager who made the entire thing awkward and unbearable for me. This was at the same company. Nothing about the rules or the program changed, but my manager did. That made all the difference between me staying and being productive and walking out the door.
I’ve been suspicious of Twitter and Facebook’s attempts at letting users decide what is “true” and hiding the posts that get voted down, let alone Google’s suggestion that they will start doing something similar with search results. My fear is simply that a large group will target things they happen to not agree with to…
