Linked: Background checks for gig workers now feature AI

And this is just one of the issues in the article below:

Checkr is on the forefront of a new and potentially problematic kind of hiring, one that’s powered by still-emerging technology. Those hoping to quickly get extra work complain that Checkr and others using AI to do background checks aren’t addressing errors and mistakes on their criminal records reports. In these cases, a glitch in the system can cost someone a job.

I do believe that the power of good AI will make a positive contribution to the world, but first the AI has to get to “good”. Right now, most AI that I’ve come in to contact with, isn’t good. Whether you want to talk about social media algorithms, automatic flagging of content, or public records searches, it’s way too easy to see where things have gone wrong, and where the data going in, isn’t good.

Any AI system with bad data, is going to be a problem. And given the examples used in this article, misidentifying people with a common name, using nothing more than crude “keywords” when evaluating someone on social media, or pulling in random, unconnected data from records, what we have in these systems is a whole lot of bad science.

Bad science that could be ruining people’s lives. Yes we have rights to question the data, but how many of us will ever know what was in the data that caused an employer to look elsewhere?

File-sharing programs carry Trojan horse The amazing thing about this is how ignorant people are to the whole file-sharing model, and how it is insecure by it’s very nature, let alone the spyware added into it. • Italy’s Employment Minister Touched a Nerve – The Workplace Is Not a Meritocracy

Mr. Poletti is right, the best thing you can do as a job seeker is be connected to people who can help you. But the Guardian article is also correct that simply leaving it up to that has been, and will be, a guaranteed way to leave too many qualified people behind. Somehow we are going to have to find a middle ground, a place where hiring involves a true meritocracy but allows access to the most diverse group of candidates that we can get. This will not happen by accident. It will only happen person by person and company by company.

Let’s normalize having a wide and diverse professional network.

Reading – Why Social Skills are More Important in a Technology-Driven Workforce

“Researchers are now finding that it is the type of jobs available to workers that is most impacted by technology.  A paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research, “The Growing Importance of Social Skills in the Labor Market,” reports that almost all job growth since 1980 is in occupations that rely heavily on social…

    Movable Type 4

Now that it’s an official release, maybe I need to find some time to upgrade the Child Abuse blog to the new version. It sounds like it’s got some nice new features, but as my experience with the beta tells me, upgrading won’t necessarily be simple. I’ll let you know how it goes when I…

Just Doing What’s In Front of You

Let’s face it, we all have things that we haven’t had space for in the last couple of years. If you are holding off on using PTO because you can’t make the big travel adventure happen right now, why not use that time to create that space? Personally, we had a couple of weeks in October scheduled for an anniversary trip overseas that has since been canceled. I haven’t canceled the PTO for one simple reason, I still want to use those 2 weeks to create the space, mentally, to do some of the things I’ve been too busy to do, like figure out where I actually want my career to go instead of just doing the work that’s in front of me, or indulge in some of those hobbies that have fallen by the wayside, or maybe even try and catch up with some friends virtually.

We all need that space, and it keeps getting harder and harder to find it. There’s nothing wrong with doing the work that is in front of us, professionally and personally. Frankly, if you can keep going and getting those things done in this environment, you are to be commended. On the other hand, just doing that prevents us from making changes and doing things differently. It keeps us stuck, and I know far too many people who are stuck right now, waiting for the space to make changes.

Make that space, any way you can. Give yourself the PTO you deserve.

Linked: California Enacts Statutes Which Will Make Discovery More Costly

Ah California, making things difficult for us poor Litigation Support folks. SB 370 changes the rules in California, and could, potentially be quite messy and expensive, depending on how the rules get clarified in the Courts. In a nutshell, it’s going to change how we produce documents: “Going forward, the producing party is required to…
