Linked – Workplace leaders must be ‘given the right tools to manage mental health conditions’
One of the many things we don’t prepare managers and leaders for is the people side of the business. You are managing people, and people can be messy. Despite what the current marketplace may tell us, people are not just a salary and productivity line on a spreadsheet.
One glaring example of this is mental health. How many of your managers have even the barest of training in how to deal with mental health issues on their team? How many have more than a cursory knowledge of what your employee assistance program offers and the requirements for accommodations for your area and industry?
In my experience, this number is very small. Most managers come into the gig without any of this training, and those who do are the ones with their own lived experience of mental health issues in their friend and family groups that pushed them to learn more.
That’s not good enough.
