153 Million Drivers Licenses for Sale – You’ll Never Guess Where They Came From
I saw the headline long before I dug into the details of this recent revelation. Maybe you did too? The shutdown of a dark web site with 153 million driver’s license records for sale.
Having lived through the MoveIt breach that resulted in the entire Louisiana DMV record set being found on the dark web, I figured we were looking at something similar, but at a federal or international level. I was wrong, but I wasn’t surprised it eventually happened. It’s been a shiny red target waiting to be exploited, despite what politicians and the like tell us about how secure it is:

So, yes, we have a company that is a big player in the age verification space, talking up age and identity verification laws, that appears to have had a long-standing ongoing leak of every ID it scanned.
IDScan.net, a Louisiana-based company, ironically, is the one involved.
This should, but won’t, end the discussion about the safety of age verification laws. What privacy advocates warned would happen as we continued to force everyone to verify their identity online has happened, and 153 million people worldwide have had their data breached. That’s a nightmare. A nightmare many of us saw coming.
Has any single online age-verification law been pulled back since this news came out? I haven’t seen any announcements about that, if it happened.
