    Can Your SMEs Train?

    ByMike McBride March 7, 2024March 7, 2024 Reading Time: 1 minute

Too many people seem to think that you can automatically teach other people about something if you’re an expert at it. Being an SME is great, but communicating that expertise so others can learn from you is a different skill. In fact, it’s a set of skills. Skills we should encourage our SMEs to learn to help our whole team grow.

Linked – No One Wants To Talk About These 3 Ways AI Copilots Will Reshape Learning

    ByMike McBride March 5, 2024March 7, 2024 Reading Time: 1 minute

I’ve had an opportunity lately to play around with some AI tools, including Microsoft Copilot for 365, and I have to admit, when I have a question about how to do something, I ask Copilot. I ask Copilot because:

It’s right there while I’m working.

I don’t have to bring in another tool or trainer.

I don’t have to take a class or watch a YouTube video to learn a new skill. (Imagine a Copliot prompt like – “How would I do a VLOOKUP with this data using ID as the unique identifier?”)

Did We Need Someone to Tell Us That Employees Don’t Care About Shareholder Profits?

    ByMike McBride March 4, 2024March 3, 2024 Reading Time: 2 minutes

It really shouldn’t be newsworthy that someone thinks employees don’t care about shareholders, and for those of us in the legal space, it should also not come as a shock that your staff doesn’t care about “profits per partner.” It’s irrelevant. I spent years assuming that if profits and shareholder value were up, that would result in better pay and raises for everyone. That was naïve. We were likely talking about the difference between a 2% and a 3% raise. It’s not nothing but not worth all the long hours and life-wrecking commitments we are often asked to give to work.

Linked – People in 20s more likely to be out of work because of poor mental health than those in early 40s

    ByMike McBride March 1, 2024February 29, 2024 Reading Time: 3 minutes

When you’re young and not on the standard education/career path due to mental health, there’s no career history or learned skills to fall back on. I think many employers would view you as unemployable in our current environment. I’m not saying that should be how it is, but it is likely the way it is. My story illustrates the path out of that, but it also contains some privilege. I was able to go to therapy. My family gave me a place to live while I wasn’t working. I had access to learning tools. I had to work hard to create opportunities to learn new skills, but I also found myself in places where I could do that. I had help.

This Was Entirely Predictable – Hackers Tricking People Into Facial Scans

    ByMike McBride February 29, 2024February 28, 2024 Reading Time: 1 minute

Collecting all of that information to verify the age of website visitors creates an extra-large target for that biometric information. When I applied online for unemployment, I had to provide copies of my social security card, driver’s license, and a live facial scan. Remember that this is the same state government with the entire DMV driver’s license database sitting on MoveIt when that tool got hacked, requiring me to store even more of my identity online with a third-party service.

    The risk level is outrageous.

AI Junk Already Ruining Dating Apps?

    ByMike McBride February 28, 2024February 27, 2024 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Tinder Using Video Selfies to Verify User Identities Because of AI Selfies

Of course, the problem is that short videos are going to be easy enough to create using AI as well, so what will be the next step dating apps have to take to verify the identity of their users and make sure customers aren’t spending all their time on the app talking to fake AI-generated profiles? Or is this the end of that entire business model?

Don’t think dating apps are the only thing at risk with AI. Any online service based on contributions by authors, artists, musicians, etc., is at risk of being overrun by AI junk. In some cases, it’s probably already happening.
